Arab and African states have seen an unprecedented expansion in tertiary education in recent times, both in terms of number of students and institutions. While this development allows for more equity in access, it goes along with a novel impact, induced by the confrontation with global trends, and the resulting necessity to align or not. The empirical study in the field of higher education research addresses the following question: Which implications does the degree of the Algerian higher education system nationalisation as well as internationalisation orientation have on institutional development as well as individual practices? Findings indicate that Algerian academics are faced with a situation of personal oscillation in engaging in research, as a consequence of the ambivalent environment of national institutions versus the consensual international dimension of research, and employ a variety of coping strategies to deal with this setting. Likewise, the higher education system itself is at crossroads. The outcomes, more broadly, inform on-going and future university reforms and associated higher education policy shifts in African and Arab contexts from the backdrop of transforming societies' transition into knowledge economies. With an academic background in international relations, sociology and education sciences, she has worked on a freelance basis with various International cooperation projects, among others, supporting the Pan-African University (PAU) Institute for Water and Energy Sciences (including Climate Change) in Algeria, and the PAU Rectorate in Cameroon, focusing on student affairs, process management, quality assurance and strategic planning. Previously, she held the position of PostDoc fellow at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa, in which framework she analysed internationalisation policies. Globalization, as it is conceptualized in the early twenty-first century, is undergoing significant transformations. This is an open access book. Relations between Brazil and Japan progressed dynamically in the 1960s and 1970s, centering on the substantial complementarity between Japan’s needing primary goods to sustain high economic growth and Brazil’s seeking non-hegemonic investment to invigorate its resource potential. Now that this complementarity has lost significance, the two countries are restructuring their relations to protect shared values of democracy, freedom, the rule of law, and the need for maintaining good relations with both China and the United States. Analyzed here is the development of this renewed bilateral relationship in multiple directions: productivity, global environment and health, migration, and triangular cooperation in third countries’ development. Facing the prospect of a declining population, Japan may become more open to international migration, but the experience with Japanese-descent Brazilian workers since the amendment of the migration control law in 1990 presents many lessons and challenges for the symbiosis of multicultural groups. Brazil, for its part, needs to address social inequality. To this end, it is fundamental to improve the quality of work. This book argues that Brazil and Japan can benefit from cooperation in managing those country-specific issues. It also discusses ways that Brazil and Japan can profit from coordinating action on global problems such as greenhouse gas reduction, mitigation of tropical diseases, healthy community building, and high-quality infrastructure for poverty reduction.

Central Peripheries explores post-Soviet Central Asia through the prism of nation-building. Although relative latecomers on the international scene, the Central Asian states see themselves as globalized, and yet in spite of – or perhaps precisely because of – this, they hold a very classical vision of the nation-state, rejecting the abolition of boundaries and the theory of the ‘death of the nation’. Their unabashed celebration of very classical nationhoods built on post-modern premises challenges the Western view of nationalism as a dying ideology that ought to have been transcended by post-national cosmopolitanism. Marlene Laruelle looks at how states in the region have been navigating the construction of a nation in a post-imperial context where Russia remains the dominant power and cultural reference. She takes into consideration the ways in which the Soviet past has influenced the construction of national storylines, as well as the diversity of each state’s narratives and use of symbolic politics. Exploring state discourses, academic narratives and different forms of popular nationalist storytelling allows Laruelle to depict the complex construction of the national pantheon in the three decades since independence. Citizenship Utopias in the Global South is an edited collection of empirical research that explores emergent forms of activism in Africa, Asia, and Latin America in times of multiple crises. At the intersection of hope and disillusionment, the diverse and thought-provoking chapters investigate emerging forms of activism in the Global South – including youth activisms, anti-racism struggles, feminist initiatives, online dissent, and Indigenous movements. In the 2020s, many parts of the world are witnessing contradictory processes of popular claims to rights, livelihoods, and social justice, and subsequent forms of populist authoritarianism and the securitization of civil society. Previously hopeful calls for dignity, democracy, and social justice – through protesting, strikes, civil society campaigns, legal reforms, and elections, for example – have been met with disdain and civic disengagement. This book investigates the re-imagination and pursuit of citizen activism in such times of popular disillusionment. It explores citizenship utopias as social imaginaries that are enacted and that articulate an ideal social order or democratic polity with ideal forms of experiencing citizenship. It emphasizes two important factors in the cultural and political exchanges among historical minorities, recent immigrants, and the majority groups dictating the conditions of these exchanges. The first factor is religion, which is a powerful tool in the construction of ethnic selves and in the establishment of boundaries between groups. The second factor is the role of national and regional folklore archives and ethnographic and cultural historical museums which create ideas and images of minorities. "Debt as power is a timely and innovative contribution to our understanding of one of the most prescient issues of our time: the explosion of debt across the global economy and related requirement of political leaders to pursue exponential growth to meet the demands of creditors and investors. The book is distinctive in offering a historically sensitive and comprehensive analysis of debt as an interconnected and global phenomenon. Rather than focusing on the historical emergence of debt as a moral obligation, the authors argue that debt under capitalism can be conceived of as a technology of power, intimately tied up with the requirement for perpetual growth and the differential capitalization that benefits ‘the 1%’. Nicht erst durch die Auseinandersetzungen um Black Lives Matter wird deutlich, dass Rassismus und Kolonialität nicht als Phänomene der Vergangenheit abgetan werden können. Anhand von der Analyse von 44 Interviews mit Schüler_innen von 9. Klassen an Hauptschulen und Gymnasien wird herausgearbeitet, wie diese Phänomene die Lebenswelt der Schüler_innen prägen. In den subjektiven Sinnbildungen der Lernenden werden zum einen koloniale Muster reproduziert, sie aber zum anderen auch massiv infrage gestellt. Diese Vorstellungen dienen als Ausgangspunkt, um dekoloniale Impulse für eine radikaldemokratisch verstandene politische Bildung zu entwickeln. Vor diesem Hintergrund diskutiert Malte Kleinschmidt dekoloniale didaktische Strategien in Bezug auf den erinnerungspolitischen Umgang mit dem historischen Kolonialismus, die koloniale Globalität der Gegenwart, die Verwerfungen des natio-ethno-kulturellen Zugehörigkeitsregimes sowie epistemische Ordnungen der Kolonialität.

This book is about the radical novelty of modern polities in a functionally differentiated world society. Premodern states were at the apex of a stratified, hierarchical society. They dominated society and all its groups and strata. Modern polities have to be understood through the ecology of relations among different function systems. They have to find and incessantly redefine their place in society. They produce decisions that are collectively binding, but in preparing these decisions experience constraints and knowledge deficiencies that are related to the complexity of a functionally differentiated society. The book concentrates on six analytical perspectives that reflect how modern polities are embedded into 21st century society. These perspectives are: the concept of inclusion and the inclusion revolution constitutive of modern polities; the internal differentiation of polities that endows them with an unprecedented complexity; the fact that polities do not know anything about society and the ways in which they compensate for this; representation and responsiveness as strategies to reconnect with society; the self-restriction of some polities that brings about ever new autonomous expert organizations; the symmetrical rise of autocracies and democracies as the two modern variants of political regimes.

Die Rolle des Internationalen Währungsfonds (IWF) in der internationalen Finanzarchitektur ist seit seiner Gründung umstritten. Im Zuge der asiatischen Wirtschafts- und Finanzkrise in der zweiten Hälfte der 1990er Jahre erreichte die Auseinandersetzung eine neue Dimension. As China’s preeminent non-governmental think tank, the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) has invited 30 leading figures from the global think tank community to sift through the myriad layers of multilateralism and global governance and provide a contextual analysis of major themes both from a theoretical and practical perspective, focusing on China in detail, but alsoexamining the world as a whole. Think tanks are essential in analyzing current trends and providing potential solutions that aid governments, international organizations and business in finding solutions that are beneficial to all. As a key source of innovative ideas, they have become even more valuable today as the pace of change accelerates, geopolitical complexity increases and the world has to deal with global crises that no country can address on their own. In order to think theoretically about our global age it is important to understand how the global has been conceived historically. 'Eurafrica' was an intellectual endeavor and political project that from the 1920s saw Europe's future survival - its continued role in history - as completely bound up with Europe's successful merger with Africa. In its time the concept of Eurafrica was tremendously influential in the process of European integration. Today the project is largely forgotten, yet the idea continues to influence EU policy towards its African 'partner'. The book will recover a critical conception of the nexus between Europe and Africa - a relationship of significance across the humanities and social sciences. In assessing this historical concept the authors shed light on the process of European integration, African decolonization and the current conflictual relationship between Europe and Africa.

Football has undergone a period of transformation over the last thirty years. Despite these global processes, different national leagues have adapted in different ways. After an initial period of success directly after Italia ’90, Italian football has gone through a period of sustained crisis. It has been blighted by financial mismanagement, corruption scandals and fan violence. This has impacted Italy's ability to compete on a global stage. Football Italia accounts for the development of Italian football in relation to the wider global transformations impacting football and addresses the reasons for Serie A's initial success and current malaise. Theoretically, this book locates Italian football within the wider power network of the state and how this has impacted political engagement. After an historical overview of the Italian political economy, Football Italia highlights how football is part of the wider political network. Football clubs are owned by powerful businessmen (and they are all men) who are also politicians. This centralisation of power within a small hegemonic group inhibits change. Within this broader structure, wider corruption scandals continue; from regular match-fixing scandals to doping. Meanwhile, stadiums are crumbling and police over-aggressive. It is within this context that we must place the fans. Both the ultras and supporters who attend official supporters’ clubs are disaffected and without the power to change the status quo. Consequently, Italian football has been in decline throughout the 21st century.

What has so far eluded historical inquiry, however, is that from its creation in 1866 through much of the twentieth century, Nestlé shaped, and was shaped by, the ideas and practices of international development. In Formulating development, historian Lola Wilhelm takes the reader on a journey from the Alpine valleys of late nineteenth century Switzerland to the hospitals of post-independence West Africa. She finds that Nestlé earned a seat at the table of international aid by partnering respected institutions, such as Save the Children and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation. Ihre transdisziplinäre Forschung nimmt insbesondere die Mediennutzung von Migrant*innen in den Blick und umfasst soziologische, psychologische, medien- und kulturwissenschaftliche sowie geschlechtersensible Perspektiven.
